Hello Tassie explorers and winter travellers! July in Tasmania is more than cold winds and crackling firesides (though we do them better than anyone!). It’s when our island comes alive with a smorgasbord of events to make your soul sing, your funny bone quiver, and your senses tingle.

Hibernation? Don’t think so! Time to wrap up, go out, and indulge in the special magic of a winter Tassie. From soaring young voices to belly laughs, winter feasts under snow-capped peaks, and glowing art, your July calendar is going to get seriously packed. Let’s get cracking!

1. The Joy: Tasmania’s Children Sing (Tuesday, July 1st)

Begin the month with some unadulterated, unbridled joy! Tasmania Sings Young is back, and it’s an absolute heart-warming experience. Imagine over 400 young voices (10-14 years), not gathered to contest, but simply to celebrate song. The one performance event brings talented singers from schools and community choirs throughout the state, under the baton of special guest conductor sensation Annie Kwok and accompanied by the amazing Tasmanian Youth Orchestra.

What makes it special? It’s a huge, collective production showcasing the incredible opportunities for young vocalists. You’ll love the collective power of choirs like Bellerive Primary Honour Choir, Campbell Street Primary, Crescendo Music Hub, Mount Stuart Primary, and more. And every evening features stellar visiting guests. On the 1st, hear the Dominic College Junior Choir, powerhouse Combined Secondary Schools Tenor & Bass Voices, and visiting Kenmore State High School Chorale all the way from Queensland!

Why you should go? It’s witnessing the future of Tasmanian music, untapped talent crafted into something truly special, under the watchful eye and support of a complete orchestra. The passion’s infectious, the ability phenomenal, and the quantity of young people’s enthusiasm guaranteed to leave a smile on your face. Suitable for the whole family, fans of the genre, and anyone in need of a shot of good citizenship and good vibes. Get your hands on tickets for a night’s choral magic!

2. Geeveston FEAST Warm Up (Thursday 3rd July & Every First Thursday)

Grazing, sharing plates, and sampling new flavour sensations are all part of the fun here. Thirsty? The bar is stocked with good Tasmanian wine, craft beer, and cider – the perfect match.

The atmosphere? Relaxed, neighbourhood-like, and just so welcoming. Ample parking and facilities to make it easy. Doors open at 5pm, so after work or school you can drop by. No admission charge (just buy food and beverages), so it’s a wonderful, budget-friendly evening out. Support local growers, eat your way through the goodness, and bask in the warm, country welcome. Mark each first Thursday on your calendar!

5. Winter Wonderland Dreaming: Christmas in July Extravaganza (Saturday, 12 July)

Want a white Christmas? Turn it into a reality, the Tasmanian way! Visit the Ben Lomond Base (just a 30-minute drive away from Launceston) for the magical Christmas in July Extravaganza.

The Festive Fix: Picture this, a snowy mountain range, roaring fire pits, the scent of mulled wine (courtesy of Bundalerra Vineyard) and chestnuts roasting over an open flame filling the air, the sound of Christmas carols on the cold wind, and a table full of festive treats made by local producers. It’s a full-on winter wonderland party!

The Full Day Out: Start with snow play! Toboggan, have a snowball battle or ski down the slopes of Ben Lomond proper. Then, when it gets a little too cold, stroll on down to The Base for the highlight. Thaw out with The Albert Brewery, Spreyton Cider, and Adam’s Distillery beverages. Get creative with the festive crafts (wreath-making, masterclasses on whisky!). Enjoy delicious winter fare. Then, dance the kilojoules away to live Tassie tunes. It’s the ultimate Tassie winter festival – jingle bells, snow, and vistas for miles!

6. Light up the Night: Lightwave Festival (Saturday, 12 July)

Experience the wonder of winter solstice time at Lightwave, the arts festival that turns breathtaking Turrakana / Tasman Peninsula into a playground of light. Lightwave is a ‘people and place’ celebration and draws on light as inspiration to create connection and warmth in the darkest time of year.

The Experience: Be dazzled by a thrilling program of light-based artwork exhibitions, live performances, local cuisine, and community events spanning three days. Its climax is a free event for all ages where innovative artwork lights up the surroundings, creating a captivating and immersive experience among the dramatic peninsula scenery.

What makes it special: It’s a community, creativity, beauty-in-the-dark-of-winter affair. Walk through stunning installations, hear local music, defrost with some fantastic food, and get bathed in community light. It’s the kind of accessible and winter-celebrating art that’s the best.

7. Country Charm & Comfort: Ross Village Market (Sunday 20th July & Every Third Sunday)
