Frequently Asked Questions
To make your experience as smooth and hassle-free as possible, we have compiled a list of frequently asked questions
The first step is to visit your app store and download the Take A Local app using your mobile device. There are links at the top of this page to take you there.
Once you have downloaded the app:
- Setup your login
- Select the tour or bundle that you wish to purchase
- Select “Buy Now” and follow the prompts to complete the purchase
The tour is now yours…..forever!
Your tour includes:
- Audio driving directions
- Visual driving cues
- Curated stories
- Detailed audio information of points of interest & suggested stops
And the tour is yours to use whenever you choose, as many times as you choose.
Once you have purchased your tour, you will be prompted to download it to your device. We recommend that you do this over WiFi before heading off on your tour to ensure your tour is ready when you are.
Your tour can be downloaded using mobile data while you are on the go, assuming you have access to data.
The start point of your tour will be dependent on the tour. We have picked start points that are easy to navigate to for a stress free experience. The app will help you get to your relevant start point.
Firstly navigate to your purchased tours within the Take A Local app – they will be located in the “My Purchases” section. When you select “Start Tour” there are two scenarios that can occur:
- If you are close to the start point of the tour, you will appear as a blue dot on the map and you can navigate yourself to the start point
- If you are far away from the start point of the tour the app will ask if you want to either be shown directions to the start point or start the tour and navigate your self. Selecting “Show Directions” will open your default maps app and display the route to the start point. Once you are close to the start point, go back into the Take A Local app and start the tour
Firstly, you can use the Take A Local app just using the inbuilt speakers of your phone however if you prefer superior audio clarity and a better all round experience we would recommend connecting your phone to the audio system in your car.
Most modern cars have Bluetooth connectivity and if you are unsure on how to connect your device to the car’s audio system we suggest checking your vehicles manual (hopefully it’s in the glovebox!) If you are using a rental car, you can always check with the rental company before heading off.
Some older vehicles require your device to be connected via an audio cable. If you don’t have one, most service stations or electronics stores will supply them. Again, check your car’s manual if unsure.
Prior to starting your tour, you will have to download your tour to your device. To save data, we suggest downloading your tour over WiFi prior setting off on your journey. That way, the tour is on your device ready to go. Once downloaded, your tour won’t need to use any data however accessing other elements of the Take A Local app will use a nominal amount of data.
We recommend it. Depending on the tour you take and how long you chose to spend on the tour, your battery level will be impacted to some degree. The last thing you want is to not be able to complete your tour because your phone battery has gone flat. Or imagine finding an amazing photo opportunity only to have a flat phone.
Most modern vehicles have USB charging ports so grab your charging cable and plug your phone in whilst driving. If you don’t have USB ports in your vehicle, most petrol stations or gadget stores will have a cheap adapter that your can plug into your cars 12v socket.
It isn’t 100% necessary to view your phone whilst on a Take A Local tour as you will be provided with audio driving directions. Your tour does include a live map showing your location using GPS technology as well as visual directions and points of interest and we recommend using a sturdy phone mount specifically for cars. This will enable you to get the most out of your tour. These mounts can usually be found in phone stores, supermarkets and petrol stations. Please note that it is illegal and dangerous to touch your phone whilst driving.
Absolutely! We understand that this is your trip and you will want to travel it as it suits you, stopping where you want and for how long you want. One of the great things about Take a Local tours is that you can stop wherever you like and pick up the tour again when you are ready.
